"Generate procedural island topography with customizable contour intervals and hypsometric OKLCH ramps"

Synthesize procedural volcanic island terrain using Perlin noise heightfields, customizable contour isolines (e.g. 50m intervals), and perceptually uniform hypsometric color ramps.

THE PROJECTION DISTORTION CRUCIBLE

Mercator Projection (1569)

Inventor: Gerardus Mercator · Family: Cylindrical

01 / THE REFERENCE

One round Earth.

A curved surface. Every flat map makes a different compromise.
02 / PRESERVE LOCAL ANGLES

Mercator

Area factor at 60°N: 4.00×. Circles preserve their shape.
03 / PRESERVE RELATIVE AREA

Gall–Peters

Area factor at 60°N: 1.00×. Shapes change while areas stay equal.

Cartographic & Political Critique:

"When co-opted into classrooms and wall atlases, Mercator visually inflates imperial powers in North America and Europe while drastically shrinking the African continent, South America, and the equatorial belt."

Operating Instructions

  • Adjust the Island Peak Elevation slider (500m to 3,500m).
  • Set the Contour Interval (25m, 50m, 100m, 200m).
  • Toggle between Portolan Vellum, Classic Swiss Imhof, and Modern Bathymetric color palettes.
  • Observe how contour spacing directly communicates slope gradient ($Gradient = \frac{\Delta h}{\Delta x}$).

Mathematical & Geodetic Theory

Marching Squares isoline extraction algorithm over 2D scalar elevation fields $f(x, y)$, mapped to OKLCH perceptual lightness and chroma elevation gradients.
